City of Surrey Holding Webinar on Zoning Bylaw Changes for Breweries

SURREY, BC – The City of Surrey has announced details of an online information session it is holding this week to present details of recent zoning bylaw changes that place it “amongst the most flexible cities in Metro Vancouver to establish a brewery and tasting lounge.”

Based on information gathered during roundtable discussions that Surrey’s Economic Development Division hosted with local breweries, a set of bylaw amendments were developed in conjunction with the Planning & Development Department and approved by the City, including:

  • Permitting breweries and distilleries to have a liquor tasting lounge in CHI (Highway Commercial Industrial), IB-3 (Business Park 3), and IL (Light Impact Industrial) Zones;
  • In the IB-3 and IL Zones, allowing for 40% of gross floor area of the business to be used as a liquor tasting lounge with allowances for retail sales (up to 150 metres/1,615 square feet) which is among the highest in Metro Vancouver;
  • In the CHI Zone, there is no size restriction for the interior liquor tasting lounge or retail sales;
  • Permitting outdoor patios in all three zones to a maximum of 80 square metres/861 square feet; and
  • Reducing parking requirements

Taken together, the City notes that these changes mean that “a brewery’s tasting lounge could be larger than a full-sized tennis court.”

The MS Teams webinar will take place on Thursday June 16th from 3:00 to 3:45 PM PST, and will cover “Surrey-specific brewery market insights and more details on the zoning bylaw changes, as well as provide an opportunity for people to ask questions.”
